Ganesh is the Hindu remover of obstacles and also is known as the beginner of things. He is the son of Parvati, who per legend, formed him out of mud and then invested him with life, to be her personal guard. There is a long story about how he got his elephant head due to a misunderstanding between him and his father, Shiva - but the symbolism is evident. All over Asia, elephants are used to remove obstacles too heavy for humans or other beasts to move, so it is only fitting that the head chosen for the God that removes obstacles be that of an elephant.
