A mala, also known as a japamala or jaap maala, is a loop of prayer beads commonly used in Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism. It is used for counting recitations (japa) of mantras, prayers, or other sacred phrases. It is also worn to ward off evil, to count repetitions within some other form of sadhana (spiritual practice) such as prostrations before a holy icon.
A mala usually has 108 beads of roughly the same size and material as each other, although smaller versions like bracelet malas often have factors of 108 such as 54, 36, or 27 beads. A distinctive guru bead or mother bead is usually included, which is not counted.
A rosary is a string of beads used in prayer, particularly within Catholicism, to count prayers while meditating on specific events in the lives of Jesus and Mary. The practice involves reciting prayers like the Lord's Prayer and Hail Mary on different beads to focus the mind on 20 different "mysteries," which are events from the Gospels.
