Compiled and Edited by George E.Linton and Virginia Hanson Introduction, This work is the result of several students of The Mahatma Letters who, through the experience of group and personal study of the book, realized the need for some kind of guide or manual to aid in understanding its various contents. It became apparent that for a fuller appreciation of the background of the Letters, as well as of the Letters themselves, the serious student should have information concerning the persons, phenomena, events in the early history of The Theosophical Society, unfamiliar terms and names, and many other items referred to in the volume. This realization bore fruit, over a period of years, in the collection of the material which is herein presented in a form which it is hoped will be useful to other students. It should be made clear at the beginning that this Readers Guide is not intended as a commentary on the subject matter contained in the letters, but only as a basic guide to assist the student in understanding references which might otherwise prove confusing or distracting. Therefore, no attempt is made to discuss metaphysical, philosophical, or occult subjects, the material is limited primarily to a narrative of events, brief explanations of historical incidents, definitions, biographical information, and descriptive material. Included also are a great many cross references, both within the book itself and to other books or published material directly related to the subject matter. The Guide is arranged in four major categories , 1. Chronology, 2. Study Notes, 3. Alphabetical Notes, 4. Appendixes. This book is an imprint of the Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar, and is imported from India.
