Most often they are made of cast iron and used to burn loose incense on a charcoal disc, to make black salt (used in banishing rituals), for mixing herbs, or to burn petitions (paper with words of power or wishes written on them). In some forms of Wicca and Celtic Mythology the cauldron symbolizes the Goddess Cerridwen. The cauldron also represents the womb (because it holds something) and on an altar it represents the earth because it is a working tool. Witches heal, but they also pursue wisdom and power. Just as the herbs mix in a pot to make a medicine, so the experiences of life mix to create understanding and wisdom. The many personalities of people mix to from a nation, tribe or circle.
